What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers (also called dental porcelain laminates or dental veneers) are tiny, tooth-shaped shells custom-fabricated from translucent porcelain. Porcelain veneers offer the most dramatic transformations in the cosmetic dentistry market.

Best of all, our cosmetic restoration is minimally invasive as it’s a non-surgical treatment. These shells are bonded to the front surface of the tooth using ultra-durable dental-grade cement. In just two office visits, you can have the dazzling smile of your dreams.

In many cases, porcelain veneers can also help give your smile a more uniform appearance which allows you to achieve a picture-perfect smile without the need for orthodontic treatment.

Benefits Of Porcelain Veneers

At State Street Smiles, our dedicated team of cosmetic dentistry experts offers veneers made of porcelain material. Not only does that make our veneers more resistant to stains but also they mimic the light reflecting properties of natural teeth. This means they have the added benefit of blending flawlessly into your smile.  Our dental veneers offer an exceptional array of additional benefits to patients, including:

  • Complete concealment of cosmetic imperfections
  • Transforming your smile in just two office visits
  • Strengthening and improving the functionality of your smile
  • Covering stains that can’t be lifted with a teeth whitening treatment
  • Custom-made veneers showcasing natural-looking results
  • Durable and long-lasting
  • No traditional orthodontic treatment required
  • Compatible with many other dental treatments

Porcelain Veneer Process

At your initial consultation, one of our skilled Hackensack dentists will conduct a thorough evaluation of your smile and oral health. That way, we can ensure not only that your health is in suitable condition for the cosmetic procedure but also that porcelain veneers are the right treatment to help you reach your desired smile goals. You’ll have the opportunity to ask Dr. Jackson any questions you may have about your treatment plan.

Dr. Jackson will color-match your veneer to the rest of your teeth. Porcelain veneers can’t be whitened so if you’d like a whiter smile, ask your cosmetic dentist about a teeth whitening procedure prior to receiving your dental veneer.

Once we’re all ready to move forward, we’ll ensure that your teeth are clean and prepared to receive your veneers. Porcelain veneers are a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment that should result in little to no pain. To ensure your comfort, Dr. Jackson will use a local anesthetic so that you don’t feel a thing during the treatment. We’ll slightly roughen the surface of your tooth before applying a temporary veneer that you’ll wear until your permanent veneer is finished.

During your second visit, we’ll place your permanent veneers. Dr. Jackson will remove your temporary veneer and clean your teeth again. From there we’ll apply the dental grade adhesive so that the permanent veneer adheres firmly to your tooth’s surface. We’ll complete the process by shining a specialized light on your teeth that will solidify the dental adhesive.

Caring For Porcelain Veneers

Following your treatment, it’s not uncommon to experience mild discomfort for a few hours but this can be easily manageable with over-the-counter pain medications.

Maintaining your porcelain veneers is simple and no additional tools or special cleaning solutions are needed. They can be maintained with daily brushing, flossing, and rinsing after meals just like natural teeth. However, we recommend using an alcohol-free mouth rinse in order to preserve the longevity of your veneer.

How long do porcelain veneers last?

Porcelain veneers can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years or even longer with proper maintenance and oral hygiene habits. Keeping a consistent oral hygiene routine consisting of daily brushing, flossing, and rinsing after meals, paired with visits to our Hackensack office at least once every six months can preserve the longevity of your veneers. Avoiding habits such as nail-biting and chewing ice cubes can also help maximize the lifespan of your veneers.

Are veneers right for me?

There’s no need to worry. During your consultation, Dr. Jackson will provide a full examination to ensure whether or not porcelains are the best treatment for achieving your smile goals.

While porcelain veneers can be used to address many types of cosmetic imperfections, they may not be right for every patient. There are several criteria we consider before recommending this cosmetic treatment, including whether the patient:

  • Has a fully developed mouth and tooth structures
  • Is free from tooth decay and oral health issues
  • Has realistic treatment goals and expectations
  • Is informed of all available cosmetic treatment options
  • Has a strong desire for enhancing the appearance of their smile
Will dental insurance cover porcelain veneers?

Typically, most insurance providers won’t cover the cost of porcelain veneers because they are considered an elective cosmetic procedure. In some cases, depending on your specific plan, a portion of the treatment may be covered. We encourage our patients to contact their insurance provider to see the exact details of what’s covered and if you need assistance, our dedicated team is happy to help.

Because State Street Smiles believes that everyone deserves their dream smile, we also have a variety of financing options available.

What if my porcelain veneer falls off or gets damaged?

It’s very important to avoid trying to reattach your porcelain veneer on your own, in the event that it becomes damaged or falls off. Doing so may compromise your treatment or can worsen the issue.

We recommend keeping the veneer clean until you can see Dr. Jackson. You can make an appointment by calling (201) 487-7030 or filling out the contact form at the bottom of this page.
