Although dental care is essential, many people avoid dentists due to dental anxiety and fear. Not everyone can handle the drilling, bright lights, or needles often associated with dental treatments. At State Street Smiles in Hackensack, New Jersey, we provide dental sedation to counter the effects of dental anxiety so you can have stress-free dental visits.
Dr. Edward and Dina Jackson offer different types of dental sedation to meet all dental care needs. In this post, we take time to explain each:
Nitrous oxide is the most common and mildest form of sedation used in dentistry. It comes as a gas inhaled through a mask placed over your nose during treatment. Drs. Edward or Dina Jackson will control the flow of this gas and administer enough to keep you comfortable and relaxed in the dental chair. Nitrous oxide produces a euphoric or “giddy” effect, which counters anxiety and fear. These effects wear off within five to ten minutes of completing your treatment, so there’s no downtime to your recovery. You can drive yourself home or go back to work immediately. Nitrous oxide sedation is safe for children and can be used for dental fillings, root canals, deep cleaning, or other treatments that trigger anxiety or fear.
IV sedation is given intravenously through your bloodstream. Complex dental treatments like implants typically require a reserved approach. This medication produces deep relaxation, where you’re unaware of what’s happening around you. Afterward, you may not remember what occurred during your procedure. IV sedation may even put you to sleep. A member of our team will monitor your sedation dosage and vital signs to keep you safe and comfortable throughout your treatment. We’ll also conduct a full review of your medical history before approving IV sedation.
The most potent form of sedation is general anesthesia, which can be administered through a mask or intravenously. General anesthesia puts you into a state of deep sleep for your procedure. Complex treatments like jaw surgery, implant surgery, cleft palate repair, or multiple wisdom tooth removal are often done using general anesthesia.
